Who they are
Venom is two failures fused together: an alien symbiote rejected by Spider-Man and a journalist whose career the hero accidentally destroyed. That shared resentment gives it a specificity most monsters lack. It knows everything Spider-Man knows, does not trigger his danger sense, and considers itself the good guy in the story, which is exactly why it works.
