Who they are

Scar is a younger brother who was never going to inherit anything and decided the solution was murder and a lie told to a child. What makes him one of animation's best is the contrast between the theatrical villain song and the quiet, bored contempt of his ordinary dialogue. He is also a case study in a villain who is excellent at seizing power and catastrophically bad at holding it.

Defining traits

Political schemingHyena alliancePsychological manipulation of a childSardonic witTotal incompetence as a ruler

What makes them dangerous

He turns a family into a weapon and convinces the heir that the murder was his own fault.

And what undoes them

He is lazy. He wanted the throne, not the work, and the kingdom starves as a result.

Things you might not know

  • Irons strained his voice during the final act of the villain song, and another performer completed the last lines.
  • Animators studied the actor's own facial mannerisms, which is why the lion's sneer is recognizably his.
  • The film's story team has cited a Shakespearean tragedy as the structural template for the whole plot.
