Who they are

The entity in Derry is not really a clown. It is something much older that takes whatever shape frightens its target most, and the clown is simply its most efficient lure. King's real subject is a town that keeps forgetting its own atrocities, and Pennywise is what a place looks like when it agrees not to notice. The 1990 miniseries turned a generation off clowns permanently.
