Who they are

Batty is an engineered soldier with a four-year lifespan who comes to Earth looking for more time and finds a maker who cannot give it to him. He kills, and the film never excuses it, but his final act is to save the man hunting him. Almost no villain in film history has an ending that so thoroughly reframes everything that came before it.

Defining traits

What makes them dangerous

He is stronger, faster and smarter than any human, and he has nothing left to lose.

And what undoes them

His own expiry date. He is fighting a clock, not a person.

Things you might not know

  • Hauer rewrote his final speech the night before shooting, cutting it down to the lines everyone now quotes.
  • The white dove in the closing scene was an on-set improvisation that the director kept.
  • The character's arc has made him a fixture in university courses on artificial personhood.
