Who they are

GLaDOS is the artificial intelligence running an abandoned testing facility, and she narrates your progress with a stream of backhanded compliments, fabricated statistics and increasingly transparent lies. Portal is a short puzzle game whose entire personality is her voice, and she proved that a game could build a beloved villain out of tone alone, with no combat between you at all.

What makes them dangerous

She controls every door, every turret and the air you are breathing.

And what undoes them

Her personality is stored in detachable cores, and she is physically bolted to one room.

Things you might not know

  • The voice was processed to sound synthetic, but the performer sang the closing song largely unprocessed.
  • The game was built by a small student team whose university project Valve acquired and expanded.
  • The promise of cake at the end of the testing became one of gaming's most repeated jokes.

Why number 1 in Video Games

An entire beloved villain built from tone of voice and nothing else. You never fight her until the very end and she still dominates every minute.

Why number 4 in Most Charismatic

Passive aggression as a complete personality. She insults you for four hours and by the end you would rather she kept talking.

Why number 17 in Smartest

She runs a facility, fabricates data, and manipulates a test subject with nothing but tone of voice. Her lying is so consistent it becomes a puzzle mechanic.
