Who they are

Eggman traps animals inside robots to build an empire, which is a genuinely unpleasant premise delivered in the brightest possible colors. He has built a space station capable of destroying a planet, and he still loses to a hedgehog every single time. The persistence is the joke and also the appeal: he is the most cheerful failure in gaming.

Defining traits

Robotics geniusBadnik armiesOrbital superweaponsBoundless self-confidenceComic inability to close

What makes them dangerous

He genuinely does build planet-threatening technology, repeatedly, and once actually uses it.

And what undoes them

Everything he builds has an exposed weak point that a small fast creature can reach.

Things you might not know

  • The character had different names in Japan and the West for years before the two were reconciled in-story.
  • His design came from a rejected proposal for the main character of the series.
  • In one game he temporarily allies with the hero, and it remains a fan-favorite storyline.

Why number 15 in Video Games

Cheerful, brilliant and endlessly unsuccessful. He is the most likeable failure in gaming and the series would be much worse without him.
